Cultivating Healthy Aging: A Comprehensive Approach for Medicare Beneficiaries

September marks Healthy Aging Month, a perfect opportunity to reflect on the importance of fostering health and wellness among seniors. As a company with dedicated geriatricians, compassionate nurses, and passionate employees committed to supporting Medicare beneficiaries, we recognize the importance of healthy aging as a multifaceted endeavor. Working closely with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), we aim to empower older adults through initiatives designed to improve their health outcomes, encourage active lifestyles, and ensure that their voices are heard in the decision-making processes regarding their care. This blog highlights essential areas of focus to enhance the aging experience: annual wellness visits, safeguarding health through immunizations, and staying active.

1. Annual Wellness Visits: A Cornerstone of Preventive Care

Keeping up with your annual wellness visits (annual comprehensive visits offered by primary care physicians’ office) are a crucial component of preventive health care for everyone, especially seniors. CMS has invested in promoting these visits, providing Medicare beneficiaries access to essential physical and mental health screenings, medication review, personalized health advice, health risk assessments, and advance care planning. These visits play a proactive role in identifying potential health issues early and managing chronic conditions. As we get older, a thorough review of medications, for accuracy and potential side effects and interactions becomes critically important. As does, advance care planning, which is a process of discussing and preparing for future health care decisions and communicating with your health care team to ensure that the care aligns with the values and preferences.

CMS recognizes this value of health promotion and preventive care. In 2011, CMS started offering annual wellness visits as a free benefit for Medicare beneficiaries. Through our partnership with CMS, Rainmakers Strategic Solutions LLC (Rainmakers) supports resources and training through the Medicare Learning Network, equipping health care providers with the knowledge to effectively bill for wellness visits thereby decreasing the barriers to these visits. CMS advocates for the importance of these wellness visits, emphasizing that every patient’s voice matters in their individual care plan. Seniors and their families must be able to voice their concerns and preferences during these discussions to ensure a tailored approach to their health.

2. Safeguarding Health Through Immunizations: Protecting Against Infectious Diseases

As we get older, the ability to fight infections decreases with the reduction of our innate immunity, our body’s first line of defense against viruses and bacteria. Additionally, as we age, there is often an increase in the prevalence of chronic medical problems like heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and other illnesses in older adults, further decreasing our immunity. Vaccines like COVID-19, flu, pneumonia and RSV, create antibodies to fight against respiratory infections. This supports wellbeing by reducing severity of symptoms, emergency visits, and hospital admissions. CMS’s emphasis on immunizations, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, has become even more pertinent. The recent FDA approval of seasonal COVID vaccines to address circulating variants marks a crucial advancement in protecting the health of older adults against these infections. Acknowledging the vital role of vaccines, CMS includes the COVID, flu, and several other vaccines as a preventive care benefit, ensuring seniors receive it without any copay or cost-sharing. To further emphasize the importance of vaccination for older adults, Rainmakers collaborates with Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs) to enhance vaccine outreach in long-term care facilities.

3. Staying active

Being physically active is foundational to healthy aging. Regular physical activity decreases the risk for many chronic diseases like dementia, heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. In addition to improving bone health and balance, physical activity decreases the severity of chronic pain. Additionally, staying physically active has many positive benefits aiding in improving mental health and helping to decrease the need to manage pain through opioids. Opioid pain medications are often associated with an increased risk of fall, suppression of breathing, addiction, and death due to unintentional overdose. Rainmakers, through the CMS’s Physician Compare Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) contract helps healthcare providers safely prescribe opioids by notifying them of the need to do so electronically.

Healthy aging is important and there are a range of resources and initiatives to support Medicare beneficiaries in maintaining their health and well-being. By taking advantage of preventive care services, staying active, and advocating for their own health care, seniors can enjoy a high quality of life in their golden years.
